What is a Gastric Balloon?
The gastric balloon (also known as a stomach balloon) is an FDA approved aortic arch weight loss procedure which involves inserting a temporary expandable balloon into your stomach through your mouth and leaving it there for up to 6 months. The gastric balloon helps you lose weight by limiting the amount of food you eat at each meal. It also provides long term satiety with smaller portions of food because it slows the passage of consumed food and liquids to the stomach.
If you’ve tried and failed to lose weight through diet and exercise and have a BMI of 30-35, as well as one or more obesity related comorbidities, a gastric balloon is an advised obesity treatment. Patients with a BMI as low as 27 may be eligible for this cure in some cases. For morbidly obese (BMI > 40) and super obese (BMI > 50) patients, stomach balloons are not recommended. Since the 1990s, the intragastric balloon has been widely used as an effective alternative for those who are not candidates for other types of bariatric surgeries or who do not want to undergo non reversible extensive obesity surgeries.
How to Make a Gastric Balloon?
Doctors must fast for 8-three hours before undergoing the gastric balloon procedure. It takes about 10-15 minutes to complete this procedure. To keep the patients in a comfortable position, sedation is used. Endoscopy is used to examine the oesophagus, stomach, and duodenum. The balloon is then guided through the oesophagus to the stomach, where it is placed inside the stomach under endoscopy. The procedure is completed when the balloon is filled with serum in the stomach using a special extension line. Patients are kept in the hospital for a few mins after the method and then discharged. Patients do not need to be admitted to a hospital. However, in the following stages, it is critical for the patient to maintain constant communication with the doctor.
What are the Risks of Gastric Balloon?
The gastric balloon is the most risk-free weight-loss procedure available. There are no incisions, so there will be no wounds, scars, or changes to your stomach or gastrointestinal tract. However, as with any procedure, there is a chance of complications, and regardless of how remote the risk, we must inform you.
Intolerance in a minority of cases (5%), patients are unable to tolerate the balloon’s side effects and request that it be removed. If you’re having trouble, we can try meds and hydration to help you manage your signs before considering removal as a last resort.
Although we must warn you that this is a possibility, the risk of a balloon rupture is extremely low. A fairly innocuous blue dye is added to the 6 and 12 month balloons as a precaution, so that if they rupture, your urine will turn green.
How is the Gastric Balloon Healing Process?
Set to start about six hours after the procedure, you can have small amounts of clear liquids. The liquid diet is usually followed until the beginning of the second week, when soft foods can be introduced. Around three weeks after the intragastric balloon is inserted, you should be able to resume regular eating.
After intragastric balloons were in place for up to 6 months, devices are used to remove them.
